I hold so much respect for this boy. I was asking him for a simple bow, and he kept insisting he should lay down. I was so confused and a tad frustrated - why can’t he bow all of a sudden? … until I realised that I had asked for the bow on the “lay down-leg”. 🙄🤦‍♀️ For him bow is with his left leg and lay down is his right. It’s been the other way around with all my other horses, which makes me forget sometimes. So here I was giving him all sorts of mixed signals and he was just trying his very best to meet my expectations. Hero horse. ✨💛 It’s never the horse’s fault.

After months of low inspiration, I can feel life returning to me. I’ve had massive problems with my feet during the winter, blisters and bruises and swelling for no apparent reason, which has resulted in seriously restricted movement. It’s not fun to move when every step hurts. 🙄 But! After switching insoles and getting some new routines, I feel sooo much better. 🙏🏼 Which means that I’m now enjoying a much more active lifestyle (from 2000-7000 steps/day to 13-20000 steps/day) and I feel extremely energised. 🤩

I hope spring is shining on you too. 🌸☀️

A large part of my work is about helping people and their horses when they encounter problems they have difficulty solving. 🤝 It can be anything - horses that do not want to leave the stable, that suddenly show discomfort during tacking up or mounting, that have become more spooky, act with aggression and more.

My role is to help identify the cause - because there is always a cause. A problem never arrives "just because". 🤷‍♀️

I ask the horse's human - have there been any changes in the last few months before the behavior occurred, no matter how insignificant they may seem, that may be behind it?

Has any horse moved or been added to the stable?

Is it shedding season?

Have you changed any feed?

New paddock?

Are your routines different?

In the vast majority of cases, it is possible with a little detective work to find one - or more often, several - possible causes. 🕵️

Only when we know the cause can we start solving the problem. Dealing with the symptom alone rarely leads to long-lasting results.

I personally think, for example, that it takes much less energy to correct the feed, than to put in work to change behaviors. A horse that is in balance from the inside out, through a balanced diet, a safe environment with other harmonious horses and satisfactory activities, is also a well-behaved horse. 😌🙏🏼☀️

What’s your horse’s success rate for the tasks

What’s your horse’s success rate for the tasks you’re giving them?

(Spoiler alert - it’s not measured by whether or not the horse *performs* the task, but how they’re *feeling* while doing it.)

A horse that has had their legs washed every day the past two years, where it’s been a slight struggle every time (stepping around, maybe pawing or throwing the head, being held on a tight rope), probably has a pretty low success rate.

Whereas a youngster that has never traveled with a trailer, and gets its first experience from curiously investigating and having a delicious meal inside, has a 100% success rate.

Something to think about when introducing new objects, exercises or tasks. If the horse first learns that *whatever it may be* is uncomfortable, boring or scary, you’ll have a lot harder time turning those feelings around, than you would’ve if you managed to instead introduce *whatever it may be* in a comfortable, exciting and calm manner.
